Megan Bisanzo, PhD

Dr. Megan Bisanzo is a Postdoctoral Fellow who provides evidence-based treatment for anxiety disorders, with a focus in treating children, adolescents, and adults. Dr. Bisanzo is passionate about creating a warm and validating therapy environment while providing actionable skills and accountability for her clients. Dr. Bisanzo believes strongly in collaborating with a child’s parents, teachers and other providers to thoroughly address functional impairment due to anxiety or other mental health disorders.

Dr. Bisanzo received her Bachelor’s degree in Human Development from Boston College and earned both her Master’s and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from St. John’s University. Dr. Bisanzo has worked with children, adolescents and their families at the St. John’s Center for Psychological Services, NY Presbyterian – Westchester and the eating disorders program at Cohen Children’s Medical Center (Northwell Health). Dr. Bisanzo has also provided individual and group therapy to adults while completing her internship at the Center for Anxiety.

Dr. Bisanzo utilizes evidence-based interventions and has received extensive training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). In addition, Dr. Bisanzo has completed training in both Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT). Dr. Bisanzo has also provided executive function coaching, helping children and families manage academic challenges resulting from ADHD.

Dr. Bisanzo’s research interests include eating disorders, treatment efficacy and the role of social support in both clinical and non-clinical populations. Dr. Bisanzo is especially interested in the intersection of social support and identity development during emerging adulthood.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems. Research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. In many studies, CBT has been demonstrated to be as effective as, or more effective than, other forms of psychological therapy or psychiatric medications.

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy (sometimes called “psychotherapy” or “counseling”) is a process through which clients work one-on-one with a trained therapist—in a safe, caring, and confidential environment—to explore their feelings, beliefs, or behaviors.

Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a brain disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. Inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity are the key behaviors of ADHD. Some people with ADHD only have problems with one of the behaviors, while others have both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. Most children have the combined type of ADHD.

Anxiety Disorders

There are several types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, specific phobias, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder and separation anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders can cause people into try to avoid situations that trigger or worsen their symptoms.

Evidence-Based Treatment

Evidence-Based Treatments (EBT) are based on scientific evidence. Psychologists and other mental health care professionals who use EBTs are dedicated to offering the best level of care available by constantly evaluating and comparing the effects of various treatments for a variety of children’s and adolescents’ mental health problems.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of talk therapy for people who experience emotions very intensely. It’s a common therapy for people with borderline personality disorder, but therapists provide it for other mental health conditions as well.
