Valerie Scelsa, Ph.D.

Dr. Valerie Scelsa is a Postdoctoral Fellow specializing in the use of evidence-based treatments for anxiety disorders, OCD, mood disorders, and behavior problems in children, adolescents, and adults. Dr Scelsa takes a collaborative and supportive approach to the treatment of the children she works with and their families. She recognizes that each individual child’s needs vary and utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based approaches flexibly to meet each child where they are at and help them reach their specific goals for treatment.

Dr. Scelsa has extensive experience utilizing CBT in a range of settings including hospitals, community mental health centers, and schools. In addition to CBT, Dr. Scelsa integrates components of other evidence-based treatments, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). She also has expertise in providing Parent Management Training (PMT) to parents to help them learn skills to address their child’s disruptive behaviors. Dr. Scelsa has trained at various sites including Genesee Behavioral Health Center for Children and Families at Rochester Regional Health, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Miami University Psychology Clinic, and Miami University Center for School-Based Mental Health.

Dr. Scelsa earned her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Miami University. Before earning her Ph.D., she completed her M.S. in Clinical Research Methods at Fordham University and her B.A. in Psychology at Trinity College. Dr. Scelsa’s research focuses on the role of emotion dysregulation, especially around anger, in the development and maintenance of depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems among children and adolescents.

Specialization

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common, chronic and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions) that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over.

Parent Management Training

Parent management training (PMT), also known as behavioral parent training (BPT) or simply parent training, aims to change parenting behaviors. It involves teaching parents positive reinforcement methods for improving children’s behavior problems. PMT is one of the most investigated treatments available for disruptive behavior, and research studies show that it improves parental mental health.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Individual therapy (sometimes called “psychotherapy” or “counseling”) is a process through which clients work one-on-one with a trained therapist—in a safe, caring, and confidential environment—to explore their feelings, beliefs, or behaviors.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems. Research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. In many studies, CBT has been demonstrated to be as effective as, or more effective than, other forms of psychological therapy or psychiatric medications.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of talk therapy for people who experience emotions very intensely. It’s a common therapy for people with borderline personality disorder, but therapists provide it for other mental health conditions as well.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

Exposure and response prevention (ERP) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) used to treat a variety of conditions, including anxiety, phobias, and eating disorders. It is considered the gold-standard treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
