Jessica Prizer Psy.D.

Dr. Jessica Prizer is a Licensed Psychologist with offices in Westchester and Manhattan. She specializes in evidence-based treatments for children, adolescents and young adults with anxiety, OCD, mood disorders, emotion regulation difficulties, and behavioral challenges. Additionally, she is trained in parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT), and PCIT adapted for selective mutism (PCIT-SM). Dr. Prizer has extensive experience working with children with selective mutism in one-day and multi-day intensives. Dr. Prizer utilizes a warm, empathetic, and collaborative approach to help patients and their families achieve their goals.

She has led multiple therapeutic groups, including social anxiety groups, parent management training (PMT) for parents of children with ADHD and disruptive behaviors, DBT skills groups for adolescents and children, and groups for parents of children with anxiety using supportive parenting for anxious childhood emotions (SPACE). Additionally, she provides school consultation and teacher trainings to help patients generalize treatment gains.

Dr. Prizer has provided therapeutic services across various settings, including the St. John’s Center for Psychological Services, Pleasantville Union Free School District, and Columbia University Clinic for Anxiety and Related Disorders (CUCARD). Dr. Prizer completed her pre-doctoral internship and postdoctoral fellowship at Cognitive and Behavioral Consultants (CBC), where she provided individual and group therapy, conducted neuropsychological evaluations, and trained schools across the tristate area in the implementation of DBT and CBT.

Before earning her doctoral degree from St. John’s University, Dr. Prizer received a master’s degree in school psychology. She received her bachelor’s degree from Bucknell University, where she graduated with a psychology major.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common, chronic and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions) that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a dyadic behavioral intervention for children (ages 2 – 7 years) and their parents or caregivers that focuses on decreasing externalizing child behavior problems (e.g., defiance, aggression), increasing child social skills and cooperation, and improving the parent-child attachment relationship.

Parent Training

Parent management training (PMT), also known as behavioral parent training (BPT) or simply parent training, aims to change parenting behaviors. It involves teaching parents positive reinforcement methods for improving children’s behavior problems. PMT is one of the most investigated treatments available for disruptive behavior, and research studies show that it improves parental mental health.

Selective Mutism (SM)

Selective Mutism is a complex childhood anxiety disorder characterized by a child’s inability to speak and communicate effectively in select social settings, such as school. These children can speak and communicate in settings where they are comfortable, secure, and relaxed. But children with Selective Mutism often show signs of severe anxiety, frequent tantrums, crying, moodiness, inflexibility, sleep problems, and extreme shyness.

Evidence-Based Treatment

Evidence-Based Treatments(EBT) are based on scientific evidence. Psychologists and other mental health care professionals who use EBTs are dedicated to offering the best level of care available by constantly evaluating and comparing the effects of various treatments for a variety of children’s and adolescents’ mental health problems.

Anxiety Disorders

There are several types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, specific phobias, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder and separation anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders can cause people into try to avoid situations that trigger or worsen their symptoms.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective for a range of problems. Research studies suggest that CBT leads to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. In many studies, CBT has been demonstrated to be as effective as, or more effective than, other forms of psychological therapy or psychiatric medications.
